The expression “sustainable tourism” became popular in the wake of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The main purpose of this groundbreaking conference was to outline a new economic and social development model that would ensure the preservation of the Planet’s natural resources.
