The indefinite pronouns: tutti

  2. Tutto is an indefinite pronoun which means everything or all. It is used in this gender-neutral, singular form to communicate an indeterminate number of things, which are often uncountable or abstract in nature.

    Abbiamo fatto tutto quello che potevamo.
    We did everything we could.

    Quando c’è la salute, c’è tutto.
    When you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything.

    È andato tutto bene?
    Did it all go well?

    I ragazzi hanno mangiato tutto.
    The kids ate everything.

    Ho fatto di tutto per convincerlo.
    I did everything to convince him.

    Mia madre ha tutto ciò che vuole.
    My mother has everything she wants.

  4. Tutti is an indefinite pronoun, always used in the plural, which means everybody, everyone, or all.

    Non preoccuparti: tutti possono sbagliare.
    Don’t worry: everyone makes mistakes.

    Tutti per uno, uno per tutti!
    All for one, one for all!

    Ho già conosciuto tutti.
    I’ve already met everybody.

    The feminine plural, tutte, may also be used if reference is being made to a specific group of women. It is, however, important to keep in mind that tutti is always used in general statements, which may include women, as well as men.

    Fanno tutte così.
    All [women] do that.

    Ce n’è per tutte!
    There’s enough for everyone [all the women].

    Ce l’ha con tutte.
    She has it in for everyone [all the women].
