Adverbs of Quantity

Adverbs of quantity (avverbi di quantità) are used to indicate a quantity of something that is not specific. These adverbs can also be used to express emotional states of being.

Following is a suggestive list of some common adverbs of quantity:

abbastanza Sono abbastanza contenta qui. I am sufficiently happy here.

almeno Promettimi almeno che ci penserai. At least promise me you'll think it over.

appena Puoi parlare un po’ più forte? Ti sento appena! Can you talk a little louder? I can barely hear you! Leonardo mi ha appena chiamato. Leonardo just called me.

assai La pasticceria di mia zia è assai popolare tra la gente del quartiere. My aunt’s pastry shop is extremely popular with the people in the neighborhood.

meno Questo progetto è meno importante rispetto a quello che abbiamo appena finito. This project is less important compared to the one we just finished.

molto Quell’uomo è un dottore molto prestigioso. That man is a very prestigious doctor.

parecchio Questa primavera ha piovuto parecchio. This spring it rained a lot.

per lo più Si occupa per lo più di studi sul Medio Oriente. He works mainly on Middle Eastern studies.

più Secondo me, parlare è più difficile che scrivere. In my opinion, speaking is more difficult than writing.

piuttosto L’incontro è stato piuttosto aggressivo. The encounter was rather aggressive.

poco Beatrice non sta bene e oggi ha mangiato poco. Beatrice isn’t feeling well and today she ate little.

tanto Il film è stato tanto commovente che non sono riuscita a trattenere le lacrime. The film was so touching that I couldn’t keep myself from crying.

troppo Ho aspettato troppo e ormai ho perso l’occasione di poterle parlare. I’ve waited too long and now I missed my chance to talk to her.
