Unlike the trapassato prossimo, the trapassato remote is only used in dependent clauses introduced by conjunctions of time.

Conjunctions of time can include, but are not necessarily limited to:

In the following sentences, both the example of the trapassato remote and the conjunction of time will be in bold.
L’uomo entrò non appena il ladro fu uscito.
The man entered as soon as the thief had left.

Non dissi niente finché i professori non ebbero finito di parlare.
I didn’t say anything until the professors had finished talking.

Dopo che ebbero ballato per un po’, le due ragazze raggiunsero i loro amici al bar.
After they had danced for a while, the two girls joined their friends at the bar.

Dopo che ebbe ricevuto la notizia della morte di Machiavelli, il papa Clemente VII permise la pubblicazione del trattato, Il Principe.
