Il quale

1. The relative pronoun il quale is variable, meaning that it changes its form according to the gender and number of the word in the preceding clause that it replaces. Quale, in its relative pronoun form, is always accompanied by a definite article—either il, la, i, or le. When used in this way, quale is either the subject or the direct object of the sentence.
   
   Quale, with the appropriate definite article, translates to who, whom, that, or which depending on the context. It is often used instead of che to avoid ambiguity.
   
   

   Il mio professore di criminologia ha appena pubblicato un romanzo poliziesco, il quale sta riscuotendo un buon successo. My criminology professor has just published a detective novel, which is proving a great success. L’attrice, la quale non voleva partecipare nel film, adesso vuole parlare con il regista. The actress, who didn’t want to participate in the film, now wants to talk to the director. I fiori, i quali sono nel giardino vicino agli alberi, non crescono bene quest’anno. The flowers that are in the garden near the trees aren’t growing well this year. Le finestre del palazzo, le quali sono state rotte la notte scorsa, verranno sostituite domani. 2. The article + quale can also be used with a preposition instead of cui. In these cases, the article combines with the preceding preposition forming a preposizione articolata (articulated preposition).
   
   

   Qual è la ragione per la quale (per cui) avevi deciso di partire? What is the reason that you’ve decided to leave? Il direttore al quale (a cui) ho mandato un’email, mi ha risposto stamattina. The director to whom I sent an email, responded to me this morning. Mio marito è andato a prendere un caffè con un suo amico con il quale (con cui) lavora. My husband went to get a coffee with his friend with whom he works.

   
   

Cui

Cui can also be used with a definite article (il, la, i, or le) preceding it. In these cases, the article is established by the gender and number of the noun which directly follows cui and not by the antecedent. Cui plus an article indicates possession and means whose or of which.

Sta con quella ragazza inglese il cui nome ora non ricordo. He’s with that English girl whose name I don’t remember now. Dove sono i libri i cui titoli cominciano con la B? Where are the books whose titles begin with the letter B? Vengo da un paese le cui mele sono buonissime. I come from a country whose apples are wonderful. Ecco il signore la cui figlia vuole trasferirsi in America. Here’s the man whose daughter wants to move to America.
