Verbs and Expressions Requiring the Subjunctive

Olinda: Sembra molto interessante. La mostra racconterà tutta la sua storia?
Carmen: Lo spero!

Subjunctive versus Indicative in Subordinate “that” Clauses

A common problem we face when learning Italian involves the proper usage of the indicative versus the subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses introduced by the conjunction "that".

Should we say: “Penso che tu hai ragione” or “Penso che tu abbia ragione”? Which one of these is the correct sentence: “Voglio che venite” or “Voglio che veniate”? To solve such doubts, most of the time, we just need to remember that the indicative mood describes factual reality, while the subjunctive mood expresses eventuality, potentiality or a subjective point of view.

Subordinate “that” clauses require the indicative when the main clause conveys knowledge, certainty, or some piece of information whose truthfulness is not being questioned.

So che Holly parla molto bene l'italiano.
I know that Holly speaks very good Italian.

It is true that the Verdi Theater hosts top-notch performances.

Ti dico che Anna parte oggi.
I'm telling you Anna leaves today.

Sono sicura che tu sai nuotare.
I’m sure you know how to swim.

I assure you this painting is a real Pollock.

Subordinate that clauses require the subjunctive mood after a main clause expressing:

  • Requests, orders, suggestions
The library director wants us to classify all new purchases by tonight.

The doctor suggests you do more tests.

  • Opinions or emotions
I think Anna is a very well-read girl.

Sono felice che veniate con me.
I'm happy you guys are coming with me.

  • Possibility, impossibility, supposition or necessity
È probabile che veda Silvia questo pomeriggio.
I might see Silvia this afternoon.

I suppose Alessandra prefers a relaxing beach holiday this year.

I need you to write the outline for the paper.

NB: The subjunctive mood is typically used after impersonal expressions:
It looks like Mauro and Anna will visit Italy next summer.

Although, after impersonal expressions conveying certainty, subordinate that clauses require the indicative mood:
Si sa che Massimo si arrabbia facilmente.
It’s well-known that Massimo gets angry easily.

Complete each sentence by using the correct verb form (subjunctive, indicative or infinitive).

  2. Marta vuole (camminare) in centro.
  3. È opportuno che voi (conoscere) Mario.
