Now that we have studied these two tenses of the past (The past perfect subjunctive and the past conditional), it is important to shed light on their close relationship. As we have seen, the past perfect (whether in indicative or in subjunctive) expresses an action that occurred in the past before another action took place. A sentence containing a verb in the past perfect subjunctive tense, and one in the past conditional, is a common construction in the Italian language. Each verb is normally in its own clause, making a two clause--or compound--sentence:
Above we see a sentence with the past conditional in the independent clause, which then triggers a past perfect subjunctive verb in the dependent clause. Normally, using the past conditional--whether the verb requires avere or essere as an auxiliary verb--directly translates to “would have _________”, with the blank being filled by the past participle of a verb. To create a construction similar to the example above, the verb in the independent clause should be a subjunctive trigger verb, such as preferire, volere, credere etc.
Sentences with a “se” clause, or “hypothetical phrases” often contain a verb in the past perfect subjunctive and another in the past conditional as well:
