Expressing agreement, disagreement, and telling people whether you think they’re right or wrong is a big part of any language! Following is a series of explanations and examples for the most frequently used phrases and expressions which convey these concepts.

1. There are a number of ways to express agreement in Italian, and each one has a different shade of meaning.
   
   1. essere d’accordo --> to agree
      
      

      Siete d’accordo con ciò che ho detto? Do you agree with what I said? Non sono d’accordo con loro. I do not agree with them. La signora è d’accordo. The lady agrees. Non siamo stati d’accordo sull’emendamento proposto. We did not agree on the proposed amendment.

   2. mettersi d’accordo --> to reach an agreement, to agree, to make arrangements
      
      

      Non si è messa d’accordo con sua madre. She hasn’t reached an agreement with her mother. Tra poco ci metteremo d’accordo su dove e quando incontrarci. In a little while, we will make arrangements for where and when to meet each other. Mettetevi prima d’accordo fra di voi. Reach an agreement among yourselves first.

   3. andare d’accordo --> to get along, to fit in well, to go along with
      
      

      I fratelli vanno d’accordo. The siblings get along. Io e te non andiamo più d’accordo. You and I don’t get along anymore. Sono una persona con cui è facile andare d’accordo. I am a person who is easy to get along with.

   4. d’accordo --> OK, alright
      
      Partiamo alle nove, d’accordo?
      We’ll leave at nine, OK?
      
2. There are also a few different ways to say that someone or something is right or correct
   
   1. essere giusto / corretto --> to be right / correct (for things and ideas)
      
      

      Non è giusto! That’s not right [fair]! È giusto [corretto] scrivere così? Is it right [correct] to write it like this?

   2. avere ragione --> to be right / correct (for people)
      
      

      Hai ragione tu. You’re right. Secondo me Andrea ha ragione. In my opinion, Andrea’s right.

   3. giusto --> right, just, fair (adj.)
      
      

      Non è la risposta giusta. That’s not the right answer. Le leggi sono abbastanza giuste. The laws are reasonably just. È venuto proprio al momento proprio giusto. He came at just the right moment.

3. Just as in expressing agreement and saying something is right, there are also a number of different ways to say something is wrong
   
   1. essere sbagliato --> to be wrong / incorrect (for things and ideas)
      
      

      Non è sbagliata questa frase? Isn’t this sentence wrong? È sbagliato dire la verità a nostro padre? Is it wrong to tell our father the truth?

   2. avere torto --> to be wrong (for people)
      
      

      Avete torto, ragazzi! You guys are wrong! Pietro ha torto quando dice che gli americani non votano. Pietro is wrong when he says Americans don’t vote.

   3. sbagliare / sbagliarsi --> to be wrong / mistaken (for people)
      
      

      Se non mi sono sbagliata questa è la chiesa di Santa Croce. If I wasn't mistaken, this is Santa Croce church. La polizia si sbaglia, non è lui il colpevole. The police are wrong, he’s not the guilty one. Abbiamo sbagliato indirizzo e siamo arrivati in ritardo. We got the address wrong and we were late. Non puoi sbagliare. You can’t go wrong.

   4. sbagliato --> wrong (adj.)
      
      

      È l’uomo sbagliato per me. He is the wrong man for me. Spero di non aver detto qualcosa di sbagliato. I hope that I haven’t said anything wrong.

   5. sbaglio --> mistake, error, oversight (n.)
      
      

      Guarda quanti sbagli ci sono! Look how many mistakes there are! Non è uno sbaglio grave. It isn’t a grave mistake.

   6. per sbaglio --> by mistake
      
      

      È successo per sbaglio! It happened by mistake! È finito lì per sbaglio. He ended up there by mistake.
